I Am Alive Review

One year ago, an event happened. No information is given as to what that event was, other than it was bad. As in apocalyptically bad. Worse even than the release of another edition of the Jaded Eye podcast, if you can believe such a thing. Following this mysterious event, which kills a large percentage of the world’s population (again, just like our podcast does), earthquakes rip apart all the major cities. Our avatar in this bleak setting is Adam. Caught on the other side of the country to his wife Julie and daughter Mary, Adam has already spent a year walking across America to get back to his home – the city of Haventon. With no idea if his family are even alive, let alone safe, Adam makes a beeline for his apartment in the hopes of finding either them or some evidence as to where they might be. Along the way he meets desperate scavengers and violent hoodlums, warped psychopaths and innocent children, all trying to survive in the remains of the once-great city. The player takes control of Adam as he arrives at the main bridge leading into the city. The bridge is barely standing, the majority of it torn away, and Adam must climb his way over what’s left of the supporting structure. Soul Calibur V Review

I’ve been a fan of ‘Project Soul’, as it’s known to pretty much only the nerdiest of us, since the first instalment, Soul Blade, back on the PS1. After its graduation from Blade to Calibur (I think maybe it changed its name when it got married or something),the series seemed to go from strength to strength, becoming a showpiece for the graphical grunt of the system it was featured on: many a head was turned by the at-the-time phenomenal combination of fancy visuals and lifelike motion capture that were hallmarks of the series, at least for the first and second Caliburs back on the Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube. SC3 just caught the tail end of that generation, and as a consequence was pretty much overlooked, but also for my money the best in the series, expanding the usually-anaemic story mode with an RPG-style side quest, detailed character creation and genuinely interesting new characters (and plenty of them). It’s almost as if they knew that just churning out prettier versions of the same old characters and tossing in a couple of throwaway new ones wasn’t enough to warrant £40 of your money. Well all that came to an end with Soul Calibur 4, when they had to make a choice between delivering another high-value experience with lots of innovation and progression, or adding Yoda as a playable character. Man on a Ledge Review

Sam Worthington exploded into the mainstream thanks to the record-breaking returns of James Cameron’s epic Avatar. An almost complete unknown to US or UK audiences, the Australian actor won the central role of Jake Sully in the Pocahontas/Smurfs mash-up which currently sits atop the all-time worldwide box office (not our proudest moment, humanity). Following that, Worthington appeared in a number of films, both blockbusters and smaller fair and he’s positioned himself (or has been positioned) as leading man material. Things haven’t all gone smoothly in the non-Avatar genre however (think Terminator Salvation or Clash of the Titans) so with his latest, once again Worthington attempts to prove he can lead a big hit which doesn’t involve blue CGI cat people. Nick Cassidy arrives at a busy New York hotel and books himself into a room near the top of the building. He orders a large breakfast and, once completed, does something a bit odd: He climbs out of the window on the ledge. Not because the breakfast was that bad. No, Nick’s on a mission: a mission to prove his innocence. We then flashback to Cassidy’s time in jail, his many failed appeals, and finally his somewhat far-fetched escape from custody at his father’s funeral.
